A (semi) New Abstract

Wanderlust
16" x 20"
Acrylic & Crackle Paste on Canvas

This was done quite a while ago, but didn't come back into my possession until very recently.  It was featured in October's What Is That Though? art show hosted by Anjipan and Look What I Found! art show at the Tea Factory in Brooklyn November 3rd hosted by Jessie Siobahn Lamprecht.
Candid photo of myself, my good friend Joey, the above-mentioned Jessie, and Bruce, with my painting poking out in the background along with the drawing Iris.

And here is Wanderlust with another self-portrait of mine at Look What I Found!

The First Product of an Undertaking

Sandman
12" x 12"
Mixed Media on Canvas

This painting and I have been through quite a bit together, and I'm thoroughly pleased with what it eventually turned out to be.  It began as a study for the painting Escapepacse for a p  ainting class in April or May of this year when that painting was still going in the direction of being a compilation of images from issues of the Sandman comics written by Neil Gaiman. Escapepacse ended up going in a different direction, and this canvas was at one point used as a palette while I was working on other pieces. Since then it sat in my studio for months, until I finally pulled it out after undertaking another project which many works will be made from. I took a very unique book- a printing of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland that had my name in place of Alice's and other friends of mine as the characters. Most of the friends that the characters were named for aren't in my life anymore, so I sifted through the pages, extracting interesting passages and illustrations to use in mixed media paintings and sculpture. This is the first piece that I have actually used any of the text in. It reads:

"Fury said to a mouse, That he met in the house,
'Let us both go to law:
I will prosecute you---
Come I'll take no denial: We must have a trial:
For really this morning I've nothing to do.'
Said the mouse to the cur, 'Such a trial dear sir,
With no Jury or Judge, would be wasting our breath.'
'I'll be Judge, I'll be Jury." said cunning old Fury:
'I'll try the whole cause and condemn you to death.'"

Art Show in Brooklyn This Weekend

The Look What I Found! Art Show has been put together by a great friend of mine and overall incredible human being, Jessie Siobahn Lamprecht, and will be featuring several artist and musician friends of mine from Long Island and the five boroughs.  I will be showing several pieces on this evening.. mostly tried and true favorites, but also a couple new pieces that haven't been publicly posted yet.

This will be the first of what hopes to become a monthly event, so come down to the Tea Factory on Stockholm St. to show your love and support for young local artists.

I will be posting pictures from the event next week as well as information on the next Look What I Found! as it becomes available.

SOLD- before I even got a chance to post it

Blue Dream
~4" x 6"
Acrylic on Hand-Stretched Canvas

I brought this piece to my good friend Anjipan's monthly What is That Though? Art Show in Ronkonkoma this past Saturday.  It was painted very recently and for that reason hadn't even been properly photographed and incorporated into my portfolio or posted on this blog.  To my great surprise and honor, one of the guests that attended the show liked it so much that he asked me to buy it off the wall.
No matter how many pieces I sell, I will continue to be intensely flattered and excited by people relating to and enjoying the art that I see as my personal form of therapy.

So much love for all the artists who participated this month, and everyone that came to support Long Island's up-and-comers. <3

Iris

Iris
19" x 12.5"
Colored Pencil on Paper

“Don't be ashamed to weep; 'tis right to grieve. Tears are only water, and flowers, trees, and fruit cannot grow without water. But there must be sunlight also. A wounded heart will heal in time, and when it does, the memory and love of our lost ones is sealed inside to comfort us.”

Sculpting...

You Had Hoped, but You Were Wrong
Stone, Dried Rose, Pine Cones, Pearls, Shells, Wire, Spray Paint

I love sculpting with nature and wire wrapping... This piece is very emotional in its concept but I think its embodiment turned out very sort of light and more hopeful than the title's message. The process of making it and having it made in its finished state makes me feel kind of hopeful by association.

Across Whatever Distance....

Across Whatever Distance18" x 21"
Acrylic on Hand-Stretched Canvas

"Across whatever distance there is, I send you my love..."
-What Dreams May Come

This piece was commissioned by a dear friend of mine who was just about family at one point in my life and whom I will probably consider family for the duration of my life. Though the message attatched to the title (which is actually written into the painting as well, though very very discreetly) was not part of the description given to me by Jeff, but it kept resonating through my mind as I was creating it. I believe that phrase in particular may have been so strongly present at the time because it both relates to Jeff personally as well as myself and in that way forms an emotional-spiritual bond within the painting between us. This piece, more predominantly than most, is lovely and dear to me for far more than just the aesthetics.

Before it was shipped out Across Whatever Distance was shown at September's What is That Though? art show in Ronkonkoma, NY hosted by Anjipan.

Just a couple sketches...

Can'tBreak

"Never trust a heart that's so bent it can't break"

Never trust someone so desperate for love and affection that they will stomp on hearts to get it.  Never trust someone whose heart can't be broken because their pain comes from themselves.

Cry or Die, You'll Never Fly

I'm not sure why, but this title just sort of came to me.  It seems fitting.

Just some Ink & Colored Pencil sketches...

 Love Hate Fire

"he loves me, he loves not anyone
he loves me he hates me
he loves me to hate me."

Breaking the Girl

August Painting

Recollection
8" x 8"
Crackle Paste, Acrylic Paint, & Dimensional Fabric Paint on Black Wooden Board

This wooden board began as one of those very mundane and cliche wall art pieces often found at home decor shops. When I saw that the paper piece that the art was printed on was peeling away from the board, I decided to tear back what I could of the paper and cover what remained with a paintable crackle paste. The crackle effect is only prominent in certain areas of the piece, but I'm satisfied with the effect overall.

Freefall
8" x 10"
Acrylic and Dimensional Fabric Paint on Canvas

This piece actually began a very long time ago, probably two or three years at this point. All that I had done then was the basic shape of the feather and the blue spots and smudges in the background. Recently I decided to pick it up again and complete it, and I'm happy with how it turned out. The light green spots in the background and veins throughout the feather are also glow-in-the-dark/UV reactive, which adds extra interest I think.

Eye Trap
16" x 20"
Acrylic and Dimensional Fabric Paint on Canvas Board

I think this flower ended up looking a bit like a venus fly trap... My favorite parts of this piece I think are the tendrils of dimensional red dots and the thick application of black and deep purple in the background, done with a palette knife.

One Way Out
4" x 5"
Acrylic and Dimensional Fabric Paint on Canvas

This one's meaning is still very buried for me subconsciously, I believe. The imagery came sort of automatically, and those things tend to make the most sense in retrospect.

Cardboard Paintings

For my good friend Angela Newman(aka Anjipan)'s What is That Though? art show last night I decided to make some quick and simple paintings on panels of cardboard for $5 each. To my great surprise and happiness, a few of them sold throughout the evening. Here are some images of those I still have..

The next WITT? show will be Saturday September 22nd at Field 10 Studios in Ronkonkoma. If you're interested in attending, email me at AdriaGiovanna@gmail.com for details!

Summer Paintings

This summer, for me, has easily been the best, and then the worst, and then the best again.  A lot of changes going on emotionally for myself and those close to me. The following series of paintings, having been created as pseudo-art-therapy, demonstrate the emotional turmoil my life has been recently.

Misfiring
12" x 12"
Acrylic on Canvas

So full of energy, this painting expresses my feelings of anticipation associated with my relationship ending. To simply know that something is best for you is not always enough, and that conflict between love of self and love of other exists here. Excitement at the idea of freedom from judgement, jealousy, and the like... but it is coupled with tension and fear at relinquishing the bond you hold so dear.  I think, for such a sad subject and so many sad thoughts involved, it is rather pretty on the surface.

Photosynthesis
16" x 20"
Acrylic on Canvas

This piece is all about learning and growing.  It was made at the most crucial of times in the breaking of two souls... the time where you both know the end is nearing and neither of you can speak to each other.  It is a time for self-realizations.  As Steven realized he no longer wanted me in his life I created this image of growing, of eyes opening. In the detail you can observe that all the eyes are welled with and dripping translucent tears...

In this way they cry silently, as I did in this time of learning and awakening.

 Icarus Me
16" x 20"
Acrylic and Dimensional Fabric Paint on Canvas

The next in the series speaks, rather literally, to my desire to "spread my wings" and find my place in the sun. Oddly enough, the phrase "a place in the sun" is very reminiscent to me of an episode of the old Nicktoon Rugrats, and this was on my mind a lot as the painting came about.  It roughly speaks to following your dreams and ambitions, even when the world appears to be falling apart around you.  In my case, it is not the wax of my wings that is melting but the very sky I attempt to fly through.

 Graceless
~10.5" x 10"
Charcoal, Acrylic, and Dimensional Fabric Paint on Canvases

The last in the series (for now) show's my period of relapse into depression post-romantic apocalypse. I think visually it pretty well encapsulates how I had been/still occasionally do feel. The title comes from a Dave Matthew's song, Grace is Gone.  It was certainly a song I was hearing a lot of at that time, and I think the simplicity of the lyrics, "she broke my heart, my grace is gone," was what resonated with my emotional state so much.  I was falling and coming apart all at once, and without any grace to speak of.
