The First Product of an Undertaking

Sandman
12" x 12"
Mixed Media on Canvas

This painting and I have been through quite a bit together, and I'm thoroughly pleased with what it eventually turned out to be.  It began as a study for the painting Escapepacse for a p  ainting class in April or May of this year when that painting was still going in the direction of being a compilation of images from issues of the Sandman comics written by Neil Gaiman. Escapepacse ended up going in a different direction, and this canvas was at one point used as a palette while I was working on other pieces. Since then it sat in my studio for months, until I finally pulled it out after undertaking another project which many works will be made from. I took a very unique book- a printing of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland that had my name in place of Alice's and other friends of mine as the characters. Most of the friends that the characters were named for aren't in my life anymore, so I sifted through the pages, extracting interesting passages and illustrations to use in mixed media paintings and sculpture. This is the first piece that I have actually used any of the text in. It reads:

"Fury said to a mouse, That he met in the house,
'Let us both go to law:
I will prosecute you---
Come I'll take no denial: We must have a trial:
For really this morning I've nothing to do.'
Said the mouse to the cur, 'Such a trial dear sir,
With no Jury or Judge, would be wasting our breath.'
'I'll be Judge, I'll be Jury." said cunning old Fury:
'I'll try the whole cause and condemn you to death.'"
